One of the best perks of being a book reviewer is getting to know, and in some instances, becoming friends with the authors of the books you read.

I've been privileged to know, and count among my friends, the wonderful romance/suspense/young adult author Sharon Sala. I first met Sharon at a Red River Romance Writers meeting in Wichita Falls in the late 1990s, and have kept up with her career ever since then. (We "Sharons" have to stick together!)

That being said, I am very excited to introduce to you Sharon's latest book, "A Field of Poppies," and let me tell you, it is absolutely one of her finest works!

Sharon has created a cast of characters for this story that are realistic and personable, and the storyline features twists and turns that keeps the tale moving along quickly, keeping the reader entralled throughout the book. Her descriptive style of writing is so acute, you can feel the pain and the joy that resonate through the characters - and that, to me, is the sign of great writing talent.

I'm so pleased for Sharon's bravery in entering the self-publishing market, and I look for good things to keep coming from her in both the self-publishing world, and through her mainstream market books as well.

Bilyeau's cast of characters, featuring the young, but dynamic novice Sister Joanna and gifted healer Brother Edmund in the lead roles, are personable as well as accurate for the time-period, yet they are as fascinating as any modern-day heroes and heroines.

When one critic called "The Crown" a great mix between Phillipa Gregory and Dan Brown, they had the description exactly right. I throughly enjoyed the fast-paced adventures, and more than a little sad to see the story come to an end. Perhaps a sequel might be in the future, one would hope?
I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a goodly amount of twists and turns to keep it lively!

Nancy Bilyeau has worked on the staffs of Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, and Good Housekeeping. Most recently, she served as deputy editor at InStyle magazine. Her screenplays have placed in several prominent industry competitions. Two scripts reached the semi-finalist round of the Nicholl Fellowships of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Her screenplay "Loving Marys" reached the finalist stage with Page International Screenwriting Awards and Scriptapalooza. A native of the Midwest, she earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan. The Crown is her first novel.

Some earlier milestones: In 1661, Nancy's ancestor, Pierre Billiou, emigrated from France to what was then New Amsterdam when he and his family sailed on the St. Jean de Baptiste to escape persecution for their Protestant beliefs. Pierre built the first stone house on Staten Island and is considered the borough's founder. His little white house is on the national register of historic homes and is still standing to this day.

Book Review - Forbidden by Syrie and Ryan M. James

I was so incredibly impressed with this novel! Syrie and Ryan James have accomplished the nearly impossible feat of writing about teenagers without being too sexually explicit while keeping the story lively, interesting, and fast-moving! Being the mother of four sons, I know teenage hormones rage at that age, but the James' story manages to convey the sense of longing and affection the two main characters have for each other without having to paint a graphic picture! Well Done!!!

With "angel" stories becoming more and more popular these days, I was intrigued to see how the plot would be played out in this novel, and the background and storytelling held my attention throughout the story.

I highly recommend this book, and I hope that this is the beginning of what promises to be a much-anticipated series!

Now, I have read many, many memoirs, biographies and autobiographies of actors and actresses, but I have to say, I was absolutely AMAZED at how wonderful this book is! Filled with ancedotes and photographs, Julie Dawn Cole details her life as a young child actress who was tapped to take part in a movie role that would change her life!

Julie details her experiences in such a lively and fun manner that you almost feel as if you are right there with her as she steps into the wonderful world of Wonkaland. Her descriptions - of seeing the captivating Chocolate Room for the first time, complete with the chocolate waterfall and river, the orange-faced little men who play the Oompa-Loompas, and all that imaginative wonderful candy trees and flowers; of working with Gene Wilder (who played Willy Wonka) and the rest of the children; of the fantastical and scary boat that sailed the "chocolate" river; and how the movie has affected the rest of her life - are some of the most vivid and well-written memories I have had the pleasure of reading.

Julie Dawn Cole - then and now!

Making the book a complete delight is the inclusion of the many, many photographs that Julie took during the making of the film. She also includes letters that she wrote to her mother and sister, who had to stay in England while Julie was off making the film, and you can read how excited and sometimes overwhelmed the little 12-year old girl was as she made movie history.

This is truly a one-of-a-kind book and I highly recommend it!

I was thoroughly enchanted with this short, but cute story! You can see glimpses of Janet Evanovich's writing magic as far as suspense and mystery goes in the intrigue that dances through this story. Her characters are full of fun, and the secondary characters are just as much of a delight to meet. The storyline is fast-paced and full of action, and I was sorry to see it come to it's satifying ending - I wanted it to go on for a while longer!

I'll admit I haven't read any of Janet's "Stephanie Plum" books, but maybe I need to check them out now! I'm only what - 18 behind!! Until I get around to those, I'm looking forward to future releases of Janet's romances which are planned for the future!

Yes, I'm on a series kick! What can I say when all my favorite authors have new books in their series out at the same time! Let it be known I've been in book heaven!

Jude Deveraux's "Edilean" series is a great favorite of mine, and I'm proud and awe-struck that one of my quotes from a previous reviews appears on the covers of her latest books.

Jude continues the story of the little town of Edilean, Virigina and it's residents with "Moonlight In The Morning," and it's a wonderful tale!

These young and lively ladies, who are all blessed with artistic talent, are very personable and fun to get to know - and the gentlemen who are attracted to them are sure to be just as personable, as well as kind, loving, handsome ... well, you get the picture!

I love how Jude Deveraux keeps the continuity of the original storyline flowing throughtout all her books, and settling down to read any book in this series is just like visiting with old friends on the front porch with a icy glass of tea. But, if this is your first trip to Edilean, you can still pick up on the specialness of this series with no problem at all - and I guarantee, you'll find yourself searching out the previous books!

I highly recommend this book!

Book Review - Hidden Summit: A Virgin River Novel by Robyn Carr

I enjoy romance series, and one of my new favorites is Robyn Carr's Virgin River series. (I know, I know, I'm late to the party - but I'm catching up!)

Set in the mountains of California, this series features honorable men and women who are loyal and loving and happy.

The latest book in the series is "Hidden Summit," and it's a winner!

Sick of running into her cheery ex-husband and his new wife, Leslie Petruso accepts a job at the Virgin River branch of Haggerty Construction and takes the high road right out of town. Now she's got Paul Haggerty's business running like a well-oiled machine. In fact, things are so busy Paul jumps at the chance to hire an extra set of hands.

Just like Leslie, Conner Danson has been burned by love. But if Leslie was disappointed by her relationship going bad, Conner was decimated. He's got no time for womenalthough he spends an awful lot of time pretending not to notice Leslie. And she's pretty busy "ignoring" the chemistry between them.

This story has a lot of suspense and action, and literally kept me up all night reading - I had to find out what happened to Connor and Leslie in the end.

I really enjoy the way Robyn Carr brings in characters who have been featured in previous novels, and keeps the continuity flowing throughout the entire series. The tight-knit community of Virgin River seems to be an idyllic place to live, but there is always a lot of lively action taking place that make it exciting as well.

I'm a big fan of Emily March's Eternity Springs series, and was thrilled when her latest book, "Lover's Leap," came out recently!

This installment of the story was a little more intense than some of the others, mainly because the focus was on Sarah Reese and Cam Murphy's secrets and how they ended up affecting more people than they imagined.

Emily March has done a wonderful job weaving this story into the tapestry that is Eternity Springs, bringing another layer to the stories, and leaving the readers anxious to know more and more.

Linda's talent for writing witty, snappy dialouge and endearing storylines is clearly evident in this tale, and I absolutely fell in love with her charming and mischievous Barlow Sisters, the unexpected driving force behind reuniting the two lovers! I'd love to see more stories featuring these two lively ladies!

"Loving Miss Laurel," Phyliss Miranda's story, finds a determined young lady facing her former love when it comes to whether the town of Farley Springs gets their roads paved in anticipation of the railroad coming, or a new library. Laurel Dean Womack, recently back from her schooling back East, finds herself pitted against saloon owner Hunter Campbell and during their battles they soon find that there is still a passion between them just waiting to be ignited. I loved the fiesty characters in this tale, and enjoyed the historical facts sprinkled into the story as well.

And last, but certainly not least, is DeWanna Pace's tale, "Sweet Talk." Handsome Dr. Noah Powell is a busy man as the doctor in Longhorn City, and while he is much sought-after by the ladies in town, he prefers to lavish his attention on his lovebird, Amigo, during what little spare time he has. But he soon finds his affections being turned in the unlikely direction of the lovely JoEmma Brown. Wheelchair bound after a bought of scarlet fever, JoEmma is an unusual girl who would rather spend time with her plants and her own peach-faced lovebird Gabby, but she has always felt an attraction to Noah, but would prefer not to battle her sister Angelina for his attention. However, when Gabby flies the coop and is found cozied up to Noah's Amigo, the two humans are drawn together by their birds' new "relationship" and find there is a spark between them that is just waiting to be fanned into a romantic flame. I truly enjoyed DeWanna's gentle characterization of JoEmma and the dignity she granted the character. She showed how JoEmma handled her situation being confined to a wheelchair with dignity and grace. Many kudos for this portrayal.

"Be My Texas Valentine" is like a lovely box of chocolates - there are treats galore just waiting to be savored by romance fans! I highly recommend this book!

And she also includes her unique way of changing around and adding to those favorites to make her own original lucious treats!

This would be a great cookbook to give first-time homeowners, brides and grooms, recent college grads, or actually anyone who loves to bake! The recipes are simple and well-written, and the photographs are fun and inspiring! I highly recommend this charming book!!

Here is a recipe that Kim recently shared that would be great for upcoming Valentine's Day goodies!

Little Peppermint Rice Krispie Treats

Makes 50 servings.
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes

INGREDIENTS

4 tablespoons butter, divided
1 package (10 ounces) miniature marshmallows (about 6 cups)
6 cups crispy rice cereal
1/4 teaspoon McCormick® Pure Peppermint Extract
1/3 cup white chocolate chips
3 candy canes, coarsely crushed, divided (about 1/4 cup)

DIRECTIONS

1. Grease 8- or 9-inch square pan with 1 tablespoon of the butter. Set aside. Melt remaining 3 tablespoons butter in large saucepan or Dutch oven on low heat. Add marshmallows; stir constantly until marshmallows are melted. Remove from heat. Add peppermint extract; mix well. Add rice cereal, chocolate chips and 2 1/2 tablespoons of the crushed candy canes; stir until well blended.

2. Press into prepared pan using a buttered spatula. Sprinkle top with remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons crushed candy canes. Cool 15 minutes. Cut into 25 squares. Remove squares from pan. Cut each square in half crosswise.

How to Crush Candy Canes: Place candy canes in large resealable plastic bag. Close bag tightly. Pound with rolling pin, mallet or heavy skillet until coarsely crushed.

(Sharon's Tip: You can get candy canes cheap now too since the Christmas stuff is on clearance!! They freeze good too!)

Wouldn't these be cute cut out with a heart-shaped cookie cutter and packaged up with red ribbon! Enjoy!!

I always enjoyed reading fairy tales as a little girl, and have been delighted with Eloisa James' "retelling" of some of my favorites. "The Duke Is Mine" is a lively, fast paced, and deliciously wicked at times romp that features a headstrong, witty heroine, a handsome and brooding hero, and a cast of characters that keep the tale enticing! Fans of Regency-era romances will adore this offering!

Christmas Book Reviews - Last Minute Holiday recommendations!

Well, the big day is almost here, and as usual, I'm waaayyy behind in everything! But I wanted to share these last minute holiday reads that have tickled my reading fancy this month! (Plus, nobody ever said you can't read a good Christmas story after Christmas, did they?)

First up - the always lovely, always looked-forward-to Christmas offering from Debbie Macomber.

This year, instead of her usual Christmas angel stories, Debbie wraps up her Cedar Cove series with "1225 Christmas Tree Lane." And it is a wonderful story, that not only highlights one last new family, but always brings closure to the rest of the residents of Cedar Cove. I'm sorry to see this series ending, but look forward to what Debbie will have to offer in the future!

Next - a lovely anthology from Fern Michaels, Elizabeth Bass, Rosalind Noonan, and Nan Rossiter.

Four holiday tales that are guaranteed to brighten your day! And the best part - you can sit down and read these short stories during your breaks in cooking, wrapping, cleaning ... well, you get the idea!

Full of drama, suspense, and even romance, I absolutely loved this tale of the old West, and will be looking forward to reading more of the Johnstone family's work in the future!

This was a different Christmas story. While it is set during the Christmas season, there is no celebrating going on in this tale. If you are familiar with Anne Perry's characters from her Charlotte and Thomas Pitt novels, you will find the story of Charlotte's mother Caroline very interesting. But if you haven't read any of the previous Christmas novels or Pitt novels, then you might be at a bit of a loss as to who's who, and what is going on.

I thought the story of the theatrical cast gathering for a trial run of a play based on Bram Stoker's "Dracula" novel to be fascinating, and the mystery that is connected to the story is stirring and intriguing. But as far as being a Christmas story that "lifts the spirits and rejoices the heart" (as is described in the above description) - well, not so much. But, to each his or her own. Fans of Perry's work will love this short, but interesting continuation of the characters she is so well known for.

Christmas Book Reviews - Three for One Special!

Well, I got a bit behind in posting my Christmas Book Reviews, so today, you get a special "Three for One" deal! :)

First up - "Comfort and Joy" by India Knight.

"Comfort and Joy" is an absolute joy to read! In a story that is spread out over three holiday seasons, the reader is brought right into Clara's family celebrations with her entire extended family, which includes two ex-husbands, three children, her family, their families and a host of friends. Clara struggles to give her bunch the "perfect" Christmas experience, but it isn't until the very end that she finally realizes that Christmas is made when her family and friends are together, no matter where the holiday is celebrated. Full of quirky English humor, this story is a lot of fun! I loved this book, and Highly Recommend it!

Next up - A Piggly Wiggly Christmas by Robert Dalby.

This was a very enjoyable holiday read, but if you haven't read the previous three books (Waltzing At The Piggly Wiggly, Kissing Babies At The Piggly Wiggly, and A Piggly Wiggly Wedding) you are going to be a little lost at first. Keeping that in mind, this is a good, old-fashioned Southern charmer of a story. Lots of humor and lots of heart-warming moments.

And last, but not least - "An O'Brien Family Christmas" by Sherryl Woods.

I love Sherryl Woods' "Chesapeake Shores" series, and this novel continues the story of the lively O'Brien clan and their love lives. Woods takes the family to Dublin, Ireland in this tale, where the matriarch Nell reunites with an old flame, while her grandson Matthew tries his best to win back his girl Laila in time for a Christmas wedding.

It helps to know a lot of the back-story of this series, but readers who are new to the stories can still pick up what is going on with who, what, when and where easily.

One of my fondest wishes is to visit Ireland one day, but until then, a trip with the O'Briens at Christmas time is almost as good!

Christmas Book Review - Christmas In Sugarcreek by Shelley Shepard Gray

There have been a lot of wonderful Amish-themed Christmas books out this year, and one I particularly enjoyed is "Christmas in Sugarcreek" by Shelley Shepard Gray.

This is a very sweet story that encompasses the love of family, the love of faith, and a good bit of gentle romance as well. I enjoyed how Shelley Gray brings out the struggle that her main characters have with their feelings for each other, and how they consider their families and community as they quietly fall in love with each other.

This is the fourth book in Shelley's "Sugarcreek" series, but it can be read as a stand alone novel on its own. I plan to go back and pick up on the previous three books to visit the families of Sugarcreek once again!

I highly recommend this one!

If you are into vampire novels, you'll find this book a lot of fun for the holiday season!

I was so pleasantly surprised by this book, for many reasons.

First of all - the setting is in my adopted home state of Alabama, and the author used many of my favorite places throughout the story - including Homewood, Helena, and Tuscaloosa. It was a delight to recognize the area.

Second, and probably most importantly, this is a well-written story! Part romance, part suspense, Julie Ford takes her readers on a fast-paced, exciting tale that is thrilling, touching, and just a tiny bit naughty! Her characters are personable and charismatic, even the bad guys and the family dynamics that are represented throughout the story are realistic and lively.

Although the title suggests that this story is a Christmas-themed book, I would highly recommend it for reading anytime of the year!

Weekend Cooking and Christmas Book Review - Debbie Macomber's Christmas Cookbook

I'm a big Debbie Macomber fan, and I was so thrilled to be able to review a copy of her new cookbook, "Debbie Macomber's Christmas Cookbook."

This "coffee-table" sized book is filled with delicious recipes, stories from Debbie about how some of the recipes orginated, decorating ideas and gift ideas! And the photographs that accompany many of the recipes are just awe-inspiring! It's the perfect "one-stop" book for the holidays!

If you are looking for a cookbook to get you in the holiday mood - this is it!

Here is a fun recipe from the book that would make a welcomed gift for the holidays or anytime the weather calls for a good soup day!

Many Bean Soup Mix

( From Debbie Macomber's Christmas Cookbook)

Ingredients:

1/2 cup dried yellow split peas
1/3 cup dried green split peas
1/3 cup dried red lentils
1/4 cup instant minced onions
1/3 cup dried green beans
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Layer all ingredients in order listed into a 1 pint glass jar. Store tightly covered at room temperature for up to 2 months.

How to Make Soup:

1 tablespoon olive oil
2 carrots, peeled and sliced
2 celery stalks, thinly sliced
salt and black pepper to taste
1 meaty ham hock (or 1 cup of chopped ham)
8 cups reduced sodium chicken broth

Warm oil in medium heavy saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add carrots and celery; season with salt and pepper. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring. Add ham, Many Bean Soup Mix, and broth. Bring to boil. Reduce heat, bring to simmer.

Cover and simmer for 2 hours or until beans are tender, stirring occasionally.

Remove ham hock from soup, and slice meat from bone, cutting into small pieces. Return ham pieces to soup, cook until warmed through.

This would make a fabulous gift for the neighbors, the postman, teachers, and anyone who loves a good, hearty soup!

I've always been fascinated with the Amish way of life, and this year there are several great Christmas books out that feature Amish and Mennonite story lines.

I'd like to know how everyone gets along after this story is over.

I'm a big fan of Judy Duarte's Mulberry Park series, and was so tickled to find out she had a Christmas story to share this holiday season.

Duarte has a knack for developing characters that are as real as the neighbor next door, and the dilemmas they find themselves in are realistic and natural.

I particularly enjoyed reading about the "Diamond Lils," the lively and fiesty group of poker-playing ladies who keep their fingers on the pulse of the neighborhood. I'd love to play a hand or two of Texas Hold 'Em with these gals!

I highly recommend this book for your holiday reading!

I'm proud to be an Irish gal, and I love finding Irish authors to recommend! I think Cecelia Ahern is remarkable writer who incorporate a lot of fun and magic into her stories - so I was delighted to find her holiday book, "The Gift."

Lou Suffern is practised in the art of concealment. He is, also, always overstretched, trying to do too many things at once. His overburdened schedule gives him few moments of peace, even in his sleep. And when he spends time at home with his wife and family, he is always distracted, and, mentally, somewhere else.

Lou is intrigued by him, and contrives to get him a job in the post room. Cecelia Ahern was born on September 30, 1981 in Dublin, Ireland. She is the daughter of the former Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. Weekend Cooking - Gooseberry Patch Quick and Easy Christmas

Now that the holiday season is in full swing, there is less time than ever to fix anything to eat (at least around my house, that it is!)

To the rescue comes the Gooseberry Patch folks with their latest book, "Quick and Easy Christmas."

This spiral-bound cookbook is full of over 220 recipes from cooks from all over the country that are great for the holidays, or any other time that you need something quick and easy to fix. Plus they have added tips and ideas on holiday decorations, crafts, and gift ideas as well.

Divided into six sections (Breakfast and Brunch, Snacks and Appetizers, Soups, Sides and Salads, Mains, Desserts and Slow Cooker), it is easy to find something yummy and fast to satisfy the entire family.

Here is one recipe I intend to try this Christmas -

EggNog Cake

18-1/4 oz. pkg. yellow cake mix with pudding
3 eggs, beaten
1/3 c. oil
1 t. nutmeg
1-1/3 c. eggnog

In a large bowl, blend together all ingredients until smooth. Pour into a Bundt® pan that has been sprayed with non-stick vegetable spray. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 55 minutes, until a cake tester comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack 10 minutes. Transfer to a nice plate. Drizzle Eggnog Glaze over cake. Makes 12 servings.

Eggnog Glaze:
2 c. powdered sugar
2 T. margarine, softened
1 t. vanilla extract
3 to 4 T. eggnog

In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients except eggnog. Add enough eggnog to reach a glaze consistency.

Christmas Book Review: Christmas Treasures: A Cape Light novel by Thomas Kinkade and Katherine Spencer

I love Thomas Kinkade and Katherine Spencer's Cape Light series - there is just something about that small town way of life that these authors portray that just touches my heart, and I particularly enjoy the Christmas-themed tales that have become an annual tradition for this collection.

This year's offering is just delightful and heartwarming!

If you have never read one of these books, do yourself a favor and check out "Christmas Treasures." I highly recommend it for your holiday reading!

But I was delightfully surprised at how good this little novel is! It's a fast read, but the characters are complex and interesting, and you are just fascinated with the entire Summerhill clan almost at once. I enjoyed how Patterson gave each of Gaby's adult children a chance to share their stories, all while revolving around their mother's deliciously mysterious surprise of a Christmas wedding!

I highly highly recommend this novel for your holiday reading! I read it in about two hours, but would gladly go back and savor it once again - it's that good!

I have always enjoyed Richard Paul Evans' Christmas stories, ever since his first bestselling novel, "The Christmas Box." He always manages to touch the heart and soul of the reader while imparting a solid moral lesson in the process.

"Lost December" is no exception. His use of the story of the prodigal son from the Bible as the basis for this tale is inspiring. As the mother of sons who can be a bit hard-headed at times, Luke Crisp's story really touched my heart, and the beautiful ending gives me renewed hope for my kids! :)

Christmas wouldn't be the same without a tale from Richard Paul Evans, and I'm so pleased that he continues this tradition again this year. I highly recommend this book.

Only cards are being accepted. Do not send letters.
Do not include email or home addresses on the cards, as the program is not meant to foster pen pal relationships.
Do not include inserts of any kind, including photos, as these items will be removed during the reviewing process.

Five Questions With ... Stephanie Dray, author of "Song Of The Nile"

I'm thrilled today to have author Stephanie Dray stop by.

Her latest book, "Song of the Nile," the 2nd book in her series about Cleopatra Selene, the daughter of Cleopatra, was released recently and it carries on the story of the little-known daughter of one of the most captivating women in ancient history. Stephanie's spellbinding storytelling skills truly shines in this novel as she traces Selene's journey into womanhood, marriage and motherhood.

Stephanie took time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions about her writing and upcoming projects.

1. At what age did you know that you wanted to become a writer?

I probably got serious about it when I was sixteen and wrote my first novel. It was very bad. No one will ever see it. But wow, it was a thrill!

2. What three important facts do you want readers to know about your book?

I’d like readers to know that Cleopatra’s legacy lived on beyond her, through her daughter and even into her daughter’s descendants. I’d like readers to know that the world changed when Cleopatra died and that we’re still impacted by what happened to her. I’d also like readers to know that this is a book about a woman who was denied a real voice in history and that I’m glad to give her one. (Or maybe I should warn them that the book is filled with ancient Egyptian magic and bloody hieroglyphics that speak the will of Selene’s goddess...)

3. Who are some of your favorite authors? Who inspires you?

I love Philippa Gregory, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Margaret George...just for starters. I’m also on a huge Ken Follett kick right now. They inspire me to tell great big epic tales, but they also humble me.

4. What do you have coming up in the future?

I’m working on the third book of the series right now (between blog posts)!

5. What advice do you have for anyone wanting to break into writing today?

The best advice I can give is to make certain you have a platform of readers who will support you in your journey, because it seems to take a village. I’m always asking help of my fans and my friends and my family. These days, getting a publisher’s interest or even getting the notice of readers online has a lot to do with how big of a buzz you can create. So if you’re kind of a hermit, this could be difficult for you.

Book Review - I Murdered The PTA by Wendy Dager

I've been on a cozy mystery roll this week, and it's been just a delight reveling in the mystery and fun that this genre has to offer!

One of the quirkest and funniest mysteries I've read this week is author Wendy Dager's "I Murdered The PTA: A Daphne Lee-Lee Misadventure," and I'm pleased to share it with you today!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

A social misfit who prefers vintage bowling shirts and boots to über-housewife sweatpants and sneakers, 32-year-old Chinese-American Daphne Lee-Lee recently lost her beloved big white guy contractor husband, Jack Lee-hence her hyphenated, redundant name-to a case of bad shellfish.

Then an explosion at the local elementary school shakes her straitlaced home town's rigid foundations-and blows up the local PTA. She didn't kill the ladies she'd dubbed "Cupcakes," but as the only survivor (and main suspect), Daphne doesn't have much time to clear her hyphenated name. She knows that even if the whole town doesn't show up at her house with pitchforks and lanterns there's a good chance the real killer is out to get her.

I love strong female characters, and the persona of Daphne Lee-Lee - rock and roll mom extraordinare - is just an absolute joy to read about in this fun novel. This gal has sass, attitude, and a heart of gold, and when she is accused of taking out the entire PTA, well, she just doesn't stand by and let the entire town roll all over her. Along with a little help from her loving, but pain-in-the-rear mom Ping, and her sweet daughters Mari and Iris, Daphne takes care of business and gets down to clearing her name - with a little help from a certain good looking detective named Antoine Neil.

The mystery of the story is lively and intriguing, and the scrapes that Daphne finds herself in are breath-taking, and guaranteed to keep readers on the edge of their seats to the very exciting conclusion.

I love the bright, smart and fiesty feel of this story. Wendy Dager has created a character that many will find endearing and charming, and I personally would love to see more of "Daphne's Misadventures"!

P.S. I served on my kid's school's PTA boards, and I wasn't a "Cupcake" at all! At least I don't think I was!!! :)

Weekend Cooking - Joanne Fluke's Lake Eden Cookbook

What is better than a cozy mystery? A cozy mystery that features yummy recipes!! And one of my favorite cozy mystery series that falls into this category is Joanne Fluke's "Hannah Swensen" mysteries!

These mysteries feature baker extraordinare Hannah Swensen, owner of "The Cookie Jar" bakery in tiny Lake Eden, Minnesota. Besides being known for her creative and delicious baking skills, she is also a whiz at solving a mystery or two! With help from her family, friends, and her two (yes, two!) love interests, Hannah ususally manages to catch the criminals and keep the town's sweet tooth satisifed as well!

For years, fans of the "Hannah" series have asked author Joanne Fluke to gather all the wonderful recipes into a cookbook, and she has done just that in her latest book, "Joanne Fluke's Lake Eden Cookbook." But this isn't just a cookbook! Along with the yummy recipes, Joanne also treats her readers to a short story about Hannah's mother's annual Christmas cookie exchange party where Hannah's family and friends gather to remember past adventures and enjoy the delicious treats that have been handed down among the group over the years.

In addition to the compliation of recipes that have been featured in the first ten books of Joanne's series, there are also brand new recipes that have never been published before!

This is a new recipe from "Joanne Fluke's Lake Eden Cookbook". It comes from a reader, Elizabeth Nole, and it's both easy and yummy. (Elizabeth says to be careful because it's addicting!)

Norwegian Chocolate Pizza

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F., rack in the middle position.

Hannah's 1st Note: Ellie always brings these to Mother's cookie exchange in pizza boxes from her restaurant, Bertanelli’s Pizza.

Ingredients:

4 cups quick oatmeal (I used Quaker Quick-1Minute)
1 cup (2 sticks, 8 ounces, 1/2 pound) salted butter, softened
3/4 cup brown sugar (pack it down in the cup when you measure it)
-------------
6-ounce package semi-sweet chocolate chips (that's one cup of chips)
3/4 cup creamy peanut butter*
-----------------
shredded coconut
red candied cherries, chopped**
chopped nuts of your choice

* - Some people have peanut allergies. If you plan to serve this to someone who does, substitute almond butter for the peanut butter. You could also substitute Nutella (a hazelnut chocolate butter) if you can find it in your area.

** - If you can't find red candied cherries, you can use well-drained maraschino cherries.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

In a medium-sized bowl, mix the oatmeal, softened butter, and brown sugar together.

Round the mixture up in a large ball with your impeccably clean hands and place it in the center of the parchment lined cookie sheet.

Pat the mixture into a circle about the size of a small pizza. Push the outside edges up a bit so that they form what looks like a crust.

Bake the "pizza" at 350 degrees F. for approximately 15 minutes, or until it turns brown and bubbles a bit.

Take your "pizza" out of the oven and let it cool slightly while you make your toppings.

If you have a double boiler, use it to make the topping. If you don't, use a heavy saucepan and stir it to keep the contents from scorching.

Combine the chocolate chips and the peanut butter over LOW heat. Stir it until everything melts and blends together.

Remove the topping from the heat and pour it over your "pizza" crust.

Decorate the top of your pizza with the coconut to simulate shredded cheese, the chopped cherries to simulate chopped tomatoes, and the chopped nuts to simulate sausage pieces.

Hannah's 2nd Note: Be creative with your "pizza" toppings. See if you can find something to simulate pepperoni, or green pepper, or any other real pizza topping you can think of.

Remember, the toppings don't go in the oven so you can use any sweet treat you can find at the grocery store.

Refrigerate your pizza until it has hardened. To serve, you can either cut it in slices with a pizza cutter just like a real pizza, or break it into pieces like toffee or peanut brittle.

Yield: One small-size pizza that everyone will love.

I LOVE gingerbread! I love the smell, I love the taste, I just love it!

So I was thrilled when I saw that the latest Fresh-Baked Mystery from author Livia J. Washburn was titled "The Gingerbread Bump-Off." But this time around, the gingerbread is a part of the clue in an intriguing mystery in the small Texas town of Weather!

A Christmas killer has been icing Phylis Newsom's friends in the sixth Fresh-Baked mystery.

Livia's cast of characters are charming, intelligent and sassy at times, and the close friendships between the main character Phyllis and her boarders are heartwarming.

This is a Texas cozy mystery at it's best! I can't wait to see what treats Livia has in store for her next book!

Book Review - Hickory Smoked Homicide: A Memphis BBQ Mystery by Riley Adams

I've been in a cozy mystery mood lately, and luckily, some of my favorite authors have new releases out! As many of you know, I love anything Southern, and Riley Adam's Memphis BBQ Mystery series is seeped in Southerness - from the delicious BBQ to the delightful nosy-ness of BBQ queen Lulu Taylor!

Riley's latest book in this series is "Hickory Smoked Homicide" and it is a dandy of a mystery!

About The Book:

BBQ-joint owner Lulu Taylor knows pretty much everyone in Memphis who loves ribs. But one person she'd rather not know is Tristan Pembroke, a snooty pageant coach with a mean streak. When she finds Tristan's dead body stuffed in a closet at a party, the police are suspicious- especially since Lulu's developed a taste for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Caught in a situation stickier than molasses, Lulu must clear her name, or risk getting fried!

BBQ, beauty pageants, and murder - wow! I was in Southern-heaven with this one! I just love the down-home earthiness of main character Lulu Taylor - her sassiness and no-nonsense attitude makes her the perfect "momma" figure for this series, and she keeps her friends and family in line! Plus she's a pretty good hand at solving the rash of murders that seem to pop up whereever she goes!

I also loved the "beauty pageant" angle to this story - those back-stage moms and darling divas are ruthless, and Riley Adams captures the whole atmosphere perfectly!

If you like your cozy mystery slathered in a spicy sauce of fun and suspense, then "Hickory Smoked Homicide" is one that you'll find more than delicious!

Book Review - Dangerous Alterations: A Southern Sewing Circle Mystery by Elizabeth Lynn Casey

I'm so excited to share this cozy mystery with you today! Elizabeth Lynn Casey is one of my favorite cozy mystery authors, and her Southern Sewing Circle mysteries are just about the cutest series around!

About The Book:

Yankee librarian Tori Sinclair has finally found a place to call home, thanks to the Sweet Briar Ladies Society sewing circle. But when her past comes back to haunt her, will her tight-knit group of friends be able to keep her safe?

When Tori accompanies the circle's fiesty matriarch to the local health clinic, the last person she expects to run into is her ex-fiance's great-aunt. And the old woman is so shocked at seeing Tori that she promptly has a heart attack and dies. Now Tori's philandering ex, Jeff - the man she's vowed to steer clear of - has shown up in Sweet Briar, insinuating he's ready for another shot with Tori.

Then Jeff turns up dead, apparently from a heart attack as well. Except the police chief believes it was murder - and that Tori may have been involved. Now she must rely on her ladies from the sewing circle to help her piece together the clues while she keeps her life from coming apart at the seams!

I just adore this series! The lively and personable cast of characters are just the kind of ladies that you hope to have as friends in your own lives, and the charming town of Sweet Briar, South Carolina is on my list of literary destinations I wish I could visit.

This story, in particular, has a whole lot going on!

1) Tori's ex-fiance shows up - and yes, he's as rotten as I have pictured him!

2) Tori is waffling about saying yes to sweet Milo's proposal, and her lady friends are strongly encouraging her to give the poor man an answer.

3) Dixie, the crusty curmudgeon former librarian, is filling in for Tori's assistant, and proves to be a firecracker, in more ways than one!

4. A certain little adored and pampered bunny turns out to be keeping a huge secret that takes everyone by surprise!

Elizabeth Lynn Casey keeps her readers entertained with her wonderful storytelling skills that feature light humor, gentle romance, and always an intriguing, suspensful mystery to be solved. What more could you ask for in a cozy mystery?

SPECIAL PROJECT:

One of my favorite things about the Southern Sewing Circle mysteries is the cute sewing projects that are included at the conclusion of each book.

In "Dangerous Alterations," Sewing matriarch Rose convinces the Sweet Briar Ladies Society Sewing Circle to make comfort pillows for breast cancer patients like her friend, Lynn.

Comfort pillows, like the ones Rose and the gang make in the book, are much smaller than traditional bed pillows and are used to make things like driving and even coughing/sneezing a bit less painful for women who have just underwent a masectomy.

This is a great (and relatively easy) service project for an individual or group to perform! Pretty cute, too!

Elizabeth announces on her website that there will be at least 10 books in this series, so we all have more great adventures to share with the ladies of the Southern Sewing Circle to come! Be sure to check out the previous four!
